Edmund Lysander Dickinson
MALE. | FIFTEEN. | ASEXUAL/DEMI-ROMANTIC. | SECOND YEAR. |
TELEKINESIS. | ONE-WAY TELEPATHY. |
POWER DESCRIPTIONS
Edmund's telekinesis is largely affected by emotion. When he's apathetic or his emotions are otherwise running low, his power is at its baseline, allowing him to move small things. His ability could be increased if he practiced, but he dislikes using his power unless he absolutely must. Frustration and sadness almost completely curb his ability to use his telekinetic power, while fear and other extremes that trigger a strong panic or fight-or-flight response increase his power but make it harder for him to consciously control, with his first instinct taking the steering wheel and his cautious, restrained self having to move to the back. This manifestation often leads to situations he regrets.
His telepathy is similar to reading minds, but he better reads emotions. The more strongly someone feels about something, the easier it is for him to read and the more likely he can actually get specific thoughts from it. He can find more if he consciously pries into someone's thoughts but he hates doing that because it feels invasive. However, strong emotions just get noticed by him naturally, even if they aren't showing in someone's posture or physical expression, and he can't help being able to sense these spikes.

APPEARANCE
Edmund has always had to deal with people telling him he looks young for his age. Even after his growth spurt at thirteen, he remains rather short, standing at just under 5'6 when not slouching. He has somewhat chubby cheeks and large eyes that help to attribute to his young appearance. He's thin as a rail and pale, too, so he looks not only young, but sickly, and his pale skin provides the perfect palette for his cheeks to blush the reddest red to ever red. His dark eyes and the bags beneath them that he can't seem to get rid of with any amount of sleep also stand out. His hair is short in the back but longer in the front, and the slight kink it contains naturally makes it become tangled and unkempt easily.
Style-wise, Edmund is accustomed to wearing long sleeves to hide bruises, though he doesn't really have to deal with that anymore. It just keeps him warm. He prefers loose, seamless shirts and sweaters to structured, collared ones, though he's not opposed to wearing those when he has to. No belt he buys can keep his pants up properly, so they're always sagging in some place, though not by intention. No matter what, he won't go shirtless, both because of insecurity and fear of revealing the words scarred into his chest.

PERSONALITY
Edmund tends to blend into the background, as a small, quiet little lump. He doesn't speak up unless he's been spoken to, but unlike many stereotypical introverts he isn't sarcastic or actively antisocial. He's content with any situation he's in as long as nobody is talking about a subject that makes him uncomfortable or singling him out to pick on. He likes to read and watch shows and could talk to you for hours on end about his favorite books, especially of the Shakespearean variety, and if you're the kind of person who takes pleasure in watching people get excited about what they love then he's the guy for you. However, he does frequently stop himself in the middle of conversation to make sure he isn't being boring or rude and worries about other people's feelings just a bit too much. He flinches a lot at sudden movements or loud noises and wishes he wouldn't get startled so easily, but apart from frustration with himself it's hard to anger him. He gets very protective of the people he loves, and would probably be willing to die for a few.
BIOGRAPHY
Edmund Lysander Dickinson was his parents' second child, three years younger than his brother, Edgar. He was followed by a sister, Juliet, who was three years younger than him. Edmund, called Andy as a shortened form of his middle name to distinguish the two similarly named boys, always looked up to the elder Edgar, and was fiercely protective of his younger sister. His brother took advantage of his devotion, using the younger boy's admiration as a tool to get him wrapped around his finger.
When Edmund was ten, he got his first taste of any sort of abnormal power. His brother seemingly developed the power to manipulate time, and this special ability quickly went to his head. Nobody in the family had any sort of talent like this and he began to act as if he were... superior. As their parents went on normally, completely oblivious, Edgar began to use his power to pause time and trap himself alone with his brother. Edgar, in a twisted way, wanted his brother to show the same potential as him. He didn't know that his brother was too young and quickly grew frustrated when he showed no hallmark of being "special." Every night, Edgar would corner Edmund in this frozen reality and force him to try and demonstrate some sort of power, anything at all. Without fail, nothing would happen, try as Edmund might, and then Edgar would shout at him, hit him, deride him for being useless. Edmund couldn't tell anyone -- after all, who would believe him? And so he kept trying, holding his head low in shame like a scorned puppy whenever he failed to make his brother proud.
This continued for nearly three years before finally Edgar had had enough. Edmund was obviously never going to be anything special. The time arrived for their nightly session, and Edgar marked his brother with some choice words, carving them into his flesh with a knife. (What are those words? They aren't really bad but they'll stay in my head for now issa secret) Edmund took this in silence, tears slipping from his eyes but his mouth clamped obediently shut, until Edgar mentioned moving on to his next "student." Their little sister, Juliet. Concerned more with his sister's well-being than his own, Edmund stumbled after his brother as he slipped to the room, ready to bring her sleeping form into the loop with them. Edmund seemed powerless to stop it until just moments before the older boy attempted to rouse her from her frozen state.
Without lifting a finger, he pushed Edgar away and slammed him into the wall. Edmund saw just the barest glimmer of a pleased smile on his brother's face before he lost consciousness from the impact. The little time bubble burst as Edgar passed out, leaving the children's parents to wake up to the sound of Edmund's choked sobbing and soon be greeted with the sight of their oldest son unconscious and bleeding from a wound on the back of his head, and their younger son holding their daughter in a tight hug, covered in his own blood. Edmund told them everything in a frenzy, terrified that he had hurt his brother. It took them some time to believe him, blaming it on shock at Edgar's soon-to-follow death, but soon he was able to demonstrate his power, albeit less strongly than before. It wasn't long past that that they sent him to Aurora Academy, for "his safety." He developed his second power during his first year of schooling, and went home briefly for the summer only to realize his parents feared him and wanted to keep him away from Juliet, thinking Edmund would cause harm to her, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Since then, he's kept cool distance from his parents, internalizing their fear, but tries to keep in contact with Juliet so that she won't forget him or have her better memories of him tainted with the ones from that night.
